Program

Despite the best attempts of teachers and parents, some students are unable to read to their potential.  Often labeled “dyslexic” or “learning disabled”, these individuals may have difficulty judging sounds within words, recognizing words, reading fluently, and/or comprehending what they read.  The Dominion Achievement Center (DAC) Reading Therapy program provides intensive, one-on-one, scientifically based instruction to remediate the sensory-cognitive processes that underlie reading, including phonemic awareness, symbol imagery, and concept imagery.

We are not a tutoring service that works with small groups of children.  Rather, we work one-to-one with students, using precise intervention and teaching methods that help individuals close the gap and stimulate their natural desire to learn.  Students discover, through the thoughtful questioning and guidance of their educational therapists, the keys to “cracking the code” of written language.

Effective reading therapy depends on accurate and thorough assessment of the individual learner’s strengths and weaknesses.  Through a scientifically validated assessment process we are able to optimize the effectiveness of our services and increase the probability that each student will benefit from his or her individualized program.

Two levels of assessment are required before a student is accepted into the DAC Reading Therapy program.  The first level involves an assessment of general cognitive processing, basic sensory-motor functioning, and social-emotional adjustment.  We accept measures administered by other qualified professionals, or can arrange to have these measures completed by DAC staff.

The second level involves the administration and interpretation of a variety of measures focused specifically on the reading process.
